Burnout is Frighteningly High Amongst Employees

Life is not easy for anyone, but lately, it’s the working class that’s facing the brunt of a stressful, deadline-filled lifestyle. According to a study that surveyed 1,500 American workers, 52 percent of respondents experienced burnout ever since the COVID-19 pandemic hit the world. 59 percent of millennials are experiencing burnout currently—up by 6 percent from pre-pandemic times. Moreover, 80 percent of respondents believe that the pandemic has greatly impacted burnout in the workplace (Source).

The above numbers reflect the alarming prevalence of burnout in the workplace. It’s not just the employees who go through it. Business owners, including the fledgling ones, are at risk too. Most of them feel that sticking to a 60- or 70-hours schedule will make them the most successful startup owners. But this notion is outdated and ineffective. It’s important that they break out of the rut because burnout can have serious physical and psychological impacts on the people experiencing it.

Making the switch

Do you wish to prevent burnout? Here are some healthy coping mechanisms to follow:

1. Eat well

A nutritious diet is not only healthy for your body but also for your brain. Your brain consumes a huge amount of energy to keep you up and going. So, you need to feed it with the right food. Consume foods that are rich in fiber, protein, fatty acids, and essential vitamins and minerals to keep your mental faculties in their optimal state. Also, don’t forget to drink plenty of water to keep your brain and body hydrated.

2. Exercise regularly

Leading a sedentary, inactive lifestyle can lead to serious health complications in the long run. Fatigue, both physical and mental, is a sign of burnout. One extremely healthy way to prevent it from overcoming you is to get moving. Regular physical activity slipped into your busy work schedule can balance out hormones and keep stress at bay.

3. Know your boundaries

You are not a machine and you are not expected to act like one. You will have your own time limitations beyond which you will not be able to act productively at work. Know when your body and mind are giving up because of your unreasonable expectations at your workplace. Create a focused work schedule that helps you balance office and fun time more effectively.

4. Get plenty of sleep

Last but not the least, you need at least 7 to 8 hours of sleep for various bodily processes to go on smoothly. Sleep is healing and it helps to fend off stress. Creating and sticking to a proper sleep routine is essential to prevent burnout. Be mindful of when you are overworking and take breaks to nap so that you remain energized and productive.

Workaholism at the cost of your health and wellbeing is certainly not a cool trend. Follow the tips above to keep burnout at bay and get the best out of the time you devote to your business venture.
